Take the well-maintained John Compton Highway north out of Castries, connect with the Gros Islet Highway, and continue north past George F.L. Charles Airport. A left turn to the west and another left turn onto Peninsular Road will bring you parallel to Vigie Beach. The beach may be littered, but the sand is shaded and the water is calm. Follow the road uphill to the far western tip, where you will see some government buildings (built by the military in the late 1800s) and a lighthouse dating from 1914. You can't get into the lighthouse without permission from the St. Lucia National Trust, but the views from here are excellent. In fact the peninsula has been used as a signal station since 1722 (in French, vigie means lookout ). On a clear day you may be able to spot the Pitons and Mount Gimie, the island's tallest peak.
